Crossing the Andes on horseback
by
the Los Patos pass. (San Martin route)
To
cross the Andes following the course that our guides mark is in
some form a great challenge, a longed for dream for many. Only to
be members of this trip that during the day will cross the cordillera
in landscapes of unequaled beauty, setting up camp while enjoying
sunsets. Sleeping under the stars by the warmth of the campfire
and arriving to Chile by the route that General San Martin followed
coming to realize that this is our maximum expression of adventure.
We are very pleased to invite you to take part.
Day
1- Mendoza: Transportation airport- meeting point. City tour.
Lunch with the head of the expedition and other members and participants
of the trip. Transportation to Barreal (province of San Juan). Immigration
and travel paperwork. Continue to Las Hornillas. Arrive to the refuge
where we will spend the night. Check of personal. Dinner.
Day
2: Breakfast. Readying of horses and pack mules. Begin horseback
ride (6 hours approx.). Arrive to Penon, set up first campsite (3200
m.) set up tents. Campfire and dinner. The two approximate days
we will collaborate with the task of arming and disarming of campsites,
cooking, and readying of the pack mules. Big breakfasts, light lunches,
big, hot dinners.
Day
3: Breakfast and begin one of the most intense parts of the
trip. Ascension to Cordon del Espinacito (4500 m.). In the afternoon
arrive in the camping zone. Set up camp. Campfire and dinner.
Day
4: Breakfast. Travel until entering Valle de los Patos. For
the afternoon set up camp on the shore of Los Patos river close
to the Gendarme National Ingeniero Sardinas. Campfire and dinner.
Day
5: Day of rest. Trek around the area. Guide led discussions
about mapmaking, map reading, altitudes, calculating distances,
emergency signals, etc. A perfect site for fishing. Campfire and
dinner.
Day
6: Breakfast
and begin. Arrive to the Argentine-Chilean border. We will travel
by the river Rocim until arriving to the refuge Carbineros de Chile.
Travel and immigration control. Continue until the zone where we
will spend the night. Set up tents, welcome dinner with typical
food.
Day
7: Breakfast. Descent of the cordillera following the river
Rocim. Arrive to El Fraile, site of our last night of the trip.
Day
8: Breakfast. Last stretch by horse until coming to Resguardo
do los Patos where a mini van will be waiting. Transportation to
Los Andes or San Felipe. Lodging in hotel. Goodbye dinner.
Day
9: Breakfast. Transportation in the morning to Mendoza in mini
van. Arrival. End of adventure.

Necessary equipment: Pull cord type bag or similar for the transportation
of clothing, sleeping bag (preferably down of thinsulate), sleeping
bag pad, dual battery powered flashlight with two extra batteries,
multiple use tool, camping knife, plastic whistle, lighter, canteen
of 1.5 liters, plastic cup, sunglasses, wool hat or similar, hat
for sun protection, two pairs of shoes (one hiking, the other a
sport shoe), wool gloves, sweatpants, horseriding type pants, warm
jacket, rain poncho, neck protection, sun protection, passport,
identification, and legal authorization of children for minors of
21 years old.
